The Brief

What needed to be achieved?

The partner brought the idea of a Japan journey centred on spiritual traditions and pilgrimage. Towaka's role was to turn that theme into a complete travel programme that could work culturally, physically and operationally.

The resulting journey connects Tokyo and Kyoto with Koyasan, several stages of the Kumano Kodo, Nachi, the coast and Ise.

What Required Judgement

How do you turn spiritual heritage into a journey rather than a sequence of sacred sites?

The programme needed to connect:

  • Buddhist and Shinto contexts
  • cultural interpretation
  • physical walking
  • varying hiking difficulty
  • temple and onsen accommodation
  • rest and recovery
  • practical movement between regions
  • The published programme contains several walking stages ranging from approximately 2–2.5 hours to a 5–6 hour, roughly 10 km section, with elevation changes and difficulty defined.

The Decisions

What Towaka decided.

Context before pilgrimage

The journey begins with cultural context before shifting into the more immersive environment of Koyasan and the Kumano pilgrimage routes.

Walking as structure

Walking is built into the programme with defined distances, duration and difficulty rather than treated as a decorative optional activity.

Accommodation as part of the sequence

Temple lodging, onsen accommodation and coastal stays help change the rhythm and character of the journey as it progresses.

A wider spiritual arc

The route allows different Japanese spiritual traditions to appear within one journey rather than treating each site in isolation.

Towaka's Role

Turning a theme into a journey that can actually be travelled.

Starting from the partner's theme and market direction, Towaka developed the programme architecture, routing and practical Japan-side design, including the sequence of pilgrimage stages, accommodation and movement between regions.

What This Demonstrates

A special-interest theme becomes stronger when it shapes the entire journey.

Here, pilgrimage influences not only what travellers visit, but how they move, where they stay, how long they walk and how the cultural context develops along the route.
